Program Description

Pick-up from hotels and transfer to Algar do Carvão. The trail, approximately 6.2 km long, passes through the protected Central Plateau, connecting the natural monuments Algar do Carvão and Furnas do Enxofre. It goes through the native Laurissilva forest, past an old geothermal borehole, offering views of the volcanic peaks Pico da Salsa and Pico Tamujo, as well as the Sanguinhal peatland. The trail passes the Pico Alto geothermal power station and leads to a viewpoint overlooking the Guilherme Moniz caldera, Pico do Alpanaque, and, in good weather, Serra de Santa Bárbara and the islands of São Jorge and Pico. The route then descends around Pico do Sanguinhal to the Algar do Carvão parking area. The trail was constructed using local wood removed during the elimination of invasive eucalyptus trees, supporting ecological restoration. Return to the hotels.
